Things to Do Before Leaving Home

Home Preparation / Security

  • Water plants or arrange for a neighbor to care for them
  • Unplug appliances sensitive to power surges (computers, microwaves, TV, etc.)
  • Check your thermostat settings
  • Remove perishables from refrigerator
  • Temporarily stop delivery services (newspapers, water, etc.) or arrange to have items picked up
  • Have someone pick up your mail, or have post office hold until your return
  • Notify alarm company you will be away and provide contact numbers of house
    sitters or caretakers
  • Tell neighbors you will be away and let them know how you can be reached in an emergency
  • Put lights on timers so they turn on and off while you are away
  • Lock all windows & doors
  • Remove any keys hidden outside the house
  • Arrange for pet care

  • Place covered luggage tags on all your suitcases and carry-ons
  • Place an extra luggage tag on the inside top of each suitcase for extra security, should your tags become unattached
  • Make sure your luggage tags have your name and current address/phone number and consider using your office address instead of your home address
Sanity Savers
  • Make a "fun bag" for each child and include games, books, toys, music player with headphones and snacks

  • Print address labels of people to send postcards to.  It is much lighter to carry than an address book
Personal Preparation
  • Purchase travel insurance with Leaders In Travel to protect you from unforeseen emergencies
  • Purchase Medjet Assist with Leaders In Travel, for emergency medical evacuation from anywhere in the world
  • Be sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your return date to the U.S., and contains 3 blank pages
  • Make copies of your travel documents for a family member and for your office
  • Make a copy of your passport, any visas, medical cards and carry in a separate place from your other valuables. Also leave a copy at home with a family
    member, office, or friend
  • Contact the credit card companies of those cards you will be taking and advise your travel dates and destinations
  • Review bill payment schedules and
arrange for pre-payments of utilities, rent or mortgage, phone, etc
  • Purchase a converter/adapter for foreign countries
  • Check any necessary travel needs for your Blackberry, PDA or cell phone
  • Check cell phone coverage area and costs of long distance or roaming fees
  • Order your travel cell phone and GPS needs from Leaders In Travel
  • If traveling outside the country, order your foreign currency from Leaders In Travel
  • Schedule doctor appointments in advance of your trip for any medical needs,
    vaccinations or updated prescriptions
  • Carry a doctor's letter describing your medication and the medical condition for which it is required
  • Always pack your prescriptions in their original labeled containers and keep with you in carry-on luggage
  • Bring an extra pair of contact lenses or eyeglasses
  • Complete an absentee ballot if you will be out-of-town at election time
